We sat down with Kat Nunez aka Mama Kat, the woman behind the amazing vocals on our latest release by Biología. Get to know this talented beauty who got ‘all the boys calling her name’….
When did you first start singing?
I’ve been singing as far back as I can remember. I was probably around four or five when I decided that’s what I wanted to do for a career when I grew up.
We heard you were in musical theatre. how long have you been doing that? were you in any special productions?
I started doing community theater when I was about twelve years old. I’ve always had a bit of a silly and theatrical personality, so I really found my nitch in musical theater. I’ve been in about 24 different shows. Some of my favorite include Rocky Horror Show (Magenta), The Drowsy Chaperone (The Chaperone), and Reefer Madness (Mae).
How is it working with your brother in music?
Unpredictable. Haha. Especially when playing live shows, he definitely keeps me on my toes because I never know what he’s gonna do or say next. He really is quite a musical genius in my eyes. Obviously his guitar skills speak for themselves. Kid knows how to jam! But every time we talk he’s just like “Hey, check out what I made this week.” I’m just in total shock every time because he makes writing awesome songs seem so effortless. He really helps to push me out of my comfort zone when performing. As an actor in musical theater you get so used to being told what to do all the time, what lines to say, how to move on stage, what notes to sing and how. Working with Joe on Biologia has made me realize how much more creatively satisfying it is to do your own thing, and how much more fun you can have performing if you just stop caring about perfection and do what feels good regardless of what people think. Thankfully the reaction to what we’ve done is pretty positive. We’re just having our own brand of silly fun that we’ve been having since we were kids, somewhere along the way we just added instruments and hit the Record button.
Who/what are your biggest inspirations?
My biggest inspiration as a performer is without a doubt Mr. David Bowie. I find him completely mesmerizing in everything he does. As far as vocalists go I love anyone that can really cut loose and improvise while maintaining vocal control. Joe Cocker, Jeff Buckley, Sara Bareilles, Justin Timberlake, Jessie J (I know, she’s a pop star, but da-yum girl got pipes!), Paul Meany (Mutemath), ZZ Ward, Kimbra, Joy Williams (The Civil Wars), Jamiroquiai. My musical tastes are pretty all over the place, but honestly anyone who is willing to put themselves out there and share their music with the world with confidence is an inspiration to me.
Do you play any instruments?
Sure do. I play my vocal chords. I’m terrible at music theory and reading music, any instrument I’ve attempted to learn I have quickly given up on. It’s not something I’m particularly proud of but at the same time being a vocalist is enough of a challenge when you are as critical of your vocal skills as I am.
If time & money were not an issue, what would you be doing?
Making music, traveling, going dancing, and going to a lot more concerts! The best moments of my life have definitely been either while performing onstage or while seeing some awesome shows.
